Congratulations to Calvin and Pam Walz and Family of Innisfail, Alberta for being chosen as the 2007 Commercial Cattleman of the Year.
Calvin has been a believer in Maine-Anjou genetics for many years. He started out in 1983 with 40 head of commercial cows using Maine bulls that he bought from Dale McMullen (his cousin) whom lived down the road. Calvin expanded his herd by buying registered Angus heifers each fall. Then in the spring he would breed them to Maine bulls and incorporate them into his cow herd. He has kept this program and increased his herd to just over 100 head by 1987. He likes to keep the numbers in that range still today.
Over the years Calvin has bought bulls from consignment sales in the area, then later buying bulls from Rocky Lane Farms at their farm sales. Most recently he has been purchasing Maine bulls from Wise Maine-Anjou Ranch.
His calves have always performed well. For the past five years his children have been in 4-H having stood near the top of the class with their home bred calves and taking Reserve Club Champion one year.
Calvin has been especially with Maine genetics, the ease of calving, the growth factor and good muscling which contributes to extra weight at sale time. The kids also like the quiet disposition which helps at halter breaking time.
Calvin says, “There is no need to be changing a good thing”.
Congratulations to the Walz family and Thank You for your support of the breed!
